There are countless ways to practice gratitude. If you are reading this post that means you woke up today. That’s a lot to be grateful for! □□ Practice Acceptance – There’s a Latin phrase (amor fati) which translates to the love of fate that speaks to this mindset. It’s a foundational practice of Stoicism. Conceptually it means to embrace all that happens in one’s life, especially the hardest stuff. Because ultimately, it’s the obstacles and adversity that become the fuel for our growth and actualization. It requires mindfulness and relentless consistency and may take some time before it becomes muscle memory.īut that’s how habits are formed. And I submit to you this is a damn good one to develop! While so much in life is out of our control, the power to choose always rests with us. We would do our holistic health a massive service to take virtually nothing for granted and choose an attitude of gratitude about everything. It takes awareness to realize we assume way too much. Until god forbid one day it doesn’t. Then we find and preach gratitude.įor a fleeting moment before our minds go back into assumptive mode. We just start taking virtually, everything for granted!Ībsent awareness (cue mindfulness), we figure all that is good will simply exist day after day after day after day. We assume that running water, good health, Wifi, a comfortable bed, food in the fridge, and the embrace of a loved one are omnipresent. We assume that our relationships and the things we attach value to will always be there. You can summarize this core belief in one word: The main barrier to this as I’ve studied is that deep down, we all have this paradigm core belief that prevents us from living in a state of gratitude. Most of us find practicing gratitude fleeting and situational which means it’s not at all consistent and therefore isn’t sticky.
