In my American history class it was named by French Settlers for the red sticks lining the bank of the Mississippi. Our Sizzling Steak Concepts franchise began shortly thereafter in the mid 1980’s in Georgia. In 1977, at the urging of a loyal customer, Ruth granted her first franchise just outside Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Shortly thereafter, a fire forced her to change the original location and she renamed the restaurant, “Ruth’s Chris Steak House.”ĭespite her lack of restaurant experience, Ruth’s enthusiasm and determination made the restaurant a greater success than even she had anticipated. The National Association of Junior Leagues was founded in New York City in 1901 under the original name The Junior League for the Promotion of Settlement. Over four decades ago, Ruth Fertel, a divorced mother of two, mortgaged her home for $22,000 to buy a small 60-seat restaurant in New Orleans, Louisiana named Chris Steak House. ![]()
